| Speedway Motorsports Inc.
has completed its $78 million purchase of Kentucky
Speedway in Sparta, Ky.
The sale closed Dec. 31, Concord,-based SMI (NYSE:TRK)
says.
The 1.5-mile track, located between Louisville
and Cincinnati, opened in 2000. It has 66,000 grandstand
seats and 50 luxury seats.
For years, former track owner Jerry Carroll unsuccessfully
lobbied NASCAR for a race featuring its top division,
the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Bruton Smith, SMI
chairman, says he will continue to fight for a Sprint
Cup date at the track.
We are going to do everything we can to bring
the great people of Kentucky what they want and
deserve, Smith says in a press release.
Kentucky Speedway holds a NASCAR Nationwide Series
race, a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race,
two ARCA RE/MAX Series races and an IndyCar Series
Race. Many NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams also have
used Kentucky Speedway in the past for testing cars
before races at tracks with similar distances and
characteristics.
SMI also owns and operates Atlanta Motor Speedway;
Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tenn.; Infineon
Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.; Las Vegas Motor Speedway;
Lowes Motor Speedway in Concord; New Hampshire
Motor Speedway in Loudon, N.H.; and Texas Motor
Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas.
