New
EPA motorcycle rules go into effect
The EPA's new rules for motorcycles
produced in 2006 now extends existing California
motorcycle emissions requirements that have been
in effect since 2004, to the rest of the country.
This is the first time in two decades that the
EPA has tightened up on motorcycle emissions laws
and the first time they set emissions standards
for motorcycles less than 50cc like scooters and
pocketbikes.
Under the new regs, more bikesbut not allwill
resort to catalytic converters. The new regulations
will also affect the exemptions for custom, kit,
and limited-production (less than 25) bikes that
are sold.
The regulations will tighten first in California
in 2008, and be followed by the same standards
going into effect for 2010 nationwide.
